J. Ernst Steinbeck, father of novelist John Steinbeck, was the first agent for SP Milling Company which operated a warehouse and flour mill in King City in the late 1800s; he claimed to be the City’s first resident. True or not, Steinbeck’s father put down roots here in the Salinas Valley and his son, our favored author, defined Steinbeck Country.
