Buffalo Soldiers

Described by some as the first Park Rangers these men were recruited From the ranks of freemen and former slaves to augment the rapid westward expansion of the United States. Along the way they were stationed in what became national parks. The Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History has an exhibit on this little known phenomena.
